Climate Crisis Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences
The Climate Crisis Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS) was established on 4 July 2023 by a resolution of the PAS Presidium. The Committee serves as an expert advisory body dedicated to informing society and decision-makers about the risks associated with climate change and proposing science-based solutions for both climate mitigation and adaptation.

About
On 4 July 2023, the Presidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS) adopted a resolution establishing the PAS Committee on the Climate Crisis. The Committee’s mission is to inform the public and policymakers about the risks associated with climate change and to propose solutions aimed at mitigating its impacts and supporting adaptation. The Committee operates as a problem-oriented advisory body under the Presidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
The Committee comprises 26 experts from a wide range of scientific disciplines and focuses on the following areas:
- Communicating the current scientific consensus on various aspects of the escalating climate crisis, particularly those related to greenhouse gas emission reductions in Poland and adaptation to ongoing climate change. The Committee publishes reports, analyses, and position papers on the climate situation in Poland and worldwide, as well as provides expert commentary and media engagement.
- Developing recommendations for climate policy and mitigation and adaptation measures in line with the latest scientific knowledge. These recommendations are intended to support government authorities at national, regional, and local levels in addressing the climate crisis. The Committee advises decision-makers on strategies for low-carbon development, energy transition, biodiversity conservation, waste management, agriculture and forestry, transport and construction, as well as environmental education and public awareness.
- Providing science-based expert support for social and grassroots initiatives related to climate protection and climate adaptation. The Committee collaborates with non-governmental organizations, civic movements, businesses, and other stakeholders engaged in climate action, while also promoting best practices and successful examples of environmentally sustainable solutions.
- Publishing regular statements and communications to help the public understand the causes, mechanisms, and potential consequences of climate-related extreme events occurring in Poland and around the world. The Committee monitors and analyses weather and climate anomalies, including heatwaves, droughts, floods, storms, wildfires, and glacier melt, as well as their impacts on human health, ecosystems, and the economy.
The Committee also holds meetings and consultations with representatives of the national government, local authorities, and public institutions as needed. It maintains ongoing dialogue and cooperation with political and administrative decision-makers at different levels and participates in public debates and legislative processes concerning climate-related issues.
The establishment of the PAS Committee on the Climate Crisis reflects the Polish Academy of Sciences’ response to the growing challenges and risks posed by climate change, one of the most pressing issues of our time. The Committee aspires to become a trusted source of information and expertise on the climate crisis, as well as a leader in scientific and public dialogue on climate-related matters.
